Understanding the Impact of the AI Act for Law Enforcement

The ARICA project consortium would like to invite LEAs for a short e-course on the recently published AI Act and its impact on Law Enforcement.

The e-course will provide:

• An overview of the overall intentions of the AI Act and how this will impact law enforcement;
• Information on forbidden use cases and high-risk (regulated, but allowed) use cases related to Law Enforcement, such as:

1. Can you profile (future) offenders using AI?
2. Can you use AI for case data analysis and insights?
3. Can you use AI for OSINT?
4. Can you use AI as part of live facial recognition systems?
5. Can you use AI as part of post-facial recognition systems?
6. Can you use facial recognition systems and other biometrics systems using AI in online environments?

• Details on obligations for Law Enforcement when using High-risk AI, making the distinction between:

1. Law enforcement users making their own AI tools or finetuning/adapting existing tools for their use;
2. Law Enforcement users using AI tools they get from a third party (either commercially or e.g. through Europol’s Tools Repository);

• Details on the new obligation under the AI act for Law Enforcement users: the Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment (and how to go about this in practice);
• The timeline for the application of the AI act and what you need to know today to prepare.

The course is conducted by Pieter Gryffroy from TIMELEX, a law firm based in Belgium.
